Betty Bitch…………

Well TBCers…………..where the hell do I begin? That was quite a humdinger of a bank holiday weekend! I’ve been left with rather a windswept look as you can see after a mind blowing 14 hour party! Yes party people I’m talking my very own, TBC launch party! It was faaaaaaaaaabalooooous! I bopped away to the delicious disco sounds of Lukey Symonds followed by techno paradise from Si Bryan, James Avery and Omar El Gohary! I shared my podium with super stylish pink flamingos, cutey animal umbrellas and my FB Oro the super sexy Gold Mannequin! Boy does he know how to party in style, sometimes I think he’s almost as cool as me! (Then I get back in the real world and remember that frankly I’m the coolest person on the planet!) I massively enjoyed getting up to mischief with all the TBC family and CANNOT WAIT for our next pandemonium filled party!!! Watch this space TBCers because next time, you’re all invited! Be there or be triangular!!!!

Interview with Paul Maddox – SPEKTRE

P1000810From bodyguards in Mexico to all day chess matches in Russia – Paul Maddox from Spektre certainly had some funny old tales to tell when TBC met up with him earlier this month. Read on for the lowdown on all things Spektre related from the local techno hero himself:

So Paul, what’s going on in the world of Spektre at the mo?

The new album which is out at the end of the summer. It’s all done now and we’re in the process of sorting out a launch party, probably in London. It’s coming out on Toolroom who I guess are best known for their more mainstream and house stuff, but they recently released a techno series called Rhythm District which has become kind of like a sub label. Umek also released an album on there but I reckon our new album will be the most full-on techno album on Toolroom so far!

What can listeners expect from the new album? Is it similar to Casting Shadows Without Light, or have Spektre changed their sound since the last album?

The new album is more clubby than Casting Shadows Without Light. For that album, with it being our first, myself and Rich had a lot of ideas and influences that we wanted to incorporate. Some of which were quite diverse, ranging from The Chemical Brothers to BT. The new album is a lot more focused.

What’s your favourite track off the new album?

Probably “Forerunner” cos its a good mix of doing something adventurous but keeping that dancefloor-friendly quality. It has a bit of a Prodigy, ravey aspect which I really like.

How have Toolroom been to work with?

Really good! I knew Matt from Toolroom from my Hardhouse days as he was also a DJ on that scene. All the guys who we deal with there are really sound too. We’re not selling CDs this time, just selling the album as downloads of all the tracks plus a mix. We will be doing some CDs as giveaways though.

So does this mean you will be touring?

We’re currently putting some dates together yeah. In the UK we’ll definitely be doing a London launch but we don’t tend to get booked that much to play in the UK. We did play at Collect in Sheffield a little while back though ………….

Yes, how was that?

Really good venue, I enjoyed that night. Loved it!

What about the crowd? How do Sheffield clubbers compare to other placed you’ve played? Wicked crowd! I knew about a third of them, haha. The pressure was on cos I knew they’d tell me if I messed anything up!

I also played a set at Mixed In Sheffield down at The Washington during Tramlines last year. It was rammed!

You live in Sheffield, what are your thoughts on the club scene at the moment?

It’s got a lot better. Around 2 years ago it was absolutely dead but now there’s quite a few people putting nights on. In Leeds and Manchester you get a lot of people putting on nights on the same night as each other and it creates competition which makes people strive to put on better nights. A bit of competition is definitely a good thing.

What’s the craziest gig you’ve ever played?

Probably Juarez in Mexico a few years ago – the then murder capital of the world! We had bodyguards walking us to the dj booth from the car and sticking around afterwards while we were playing and we saw armed police on the back of pick up trucks on the way to gigs. Nothing kicked off though and the crowd were really up for it. We actually went back there more recently though and things have calmed down a lot.

What about music, what tunes are on your iPod at the mo?

Techno wise – NAPLES! We have guest mixes on our podcast and it’s become a bit of a joke between us at the moment because they’re all from Naples! Recently we’ve had Sasha Carassi, Roberto Capuano and Luigi Madonna. We read a biog about them at the start of the podcast and it seems that every time they’re randomly from Naples! There’s loads of young producers from there as well like MDS and Hollen. Naples is the new Berlin – you heard it here first!

Other than techno – all sorts I’ve started a new side project doing slightly more musical stuff, with a more garagy influence. It’s called Human Development. We’ve done a couple of tracks so far and I’ve been talking to a couple of labels about a release, so watch this space. https://soundcloud.com/humandev

What’s your favourite techno tune?

Of all time? Anything by Hardfloor, Acperience being one of the best. Difficult to fit into any of our sets because the sound is so old school. When we played Space we dropped Golden Girls “Kinetic” which is one of the guys from Orbital and another of my favourite ever tunes.

Your record label Respekt what’s new for that?

We’ve just had a single of ours called Erase the Tapes doing well on beatport top 100 much as i’d like to ignore these things. It was a track that was going to be on the album. Jon Rundell has done a remix which has done really, really well.

Finally Paul tell us a funny DJing story……

We did a little tour in Russia and in between gigs the promoter said he was going to take us to his friend’s house. We envisaged going round to someone’s place, drinking a few beers, chilling out before the next gig. We drove 2 hours into the countryside and I was thinking – “where the hell are we going?”. We turned up at this massive, old house right out in the sticks and were greeted at the door by this big guy in a vest. I didn’t know what to think when we went inside but he had a bbq on the go and then bizarrely insisted we play chess with him – sound bloke, but that kind of thing only ever happens in Russia!

So TBCers look out for the new album from Spektre and book those tickets to Naples! Bonjourno new techno haven! Check Spektre out at http://www.spektre.co.uk

It has been a quiet week socially for the TBC crew however it has not been quiet at TBC HQ. As you can see from the extensive playlist above we have been busy listening to new release albums, EP’s, radio shows, podcasts as well as digging out some old gems and classics. We may well have terrorised the neighbours over the last 7 days with some hefty techno, electro, house and, somewhat bizarrely, some 80’s post-punk.

We were excited to receive some new CD’s in the post including DJ Hell’s new compilation Kern Vol.2 on Tresor, enjoyed digging out some recent releases via Tiefschwarz (a TBC favourite act) on the new Renaissance Mix Collection and tuning into the BBC for a raft of impressive radio shows from Radio One and Six.

The picks this week:

-Kern Vol.2 mixed by Dj Hell (2013) – We were impressed to see one of the legends of Electronic music DJ Hell has released a new compilation via Tresor. Having seen Helmut during our exploits at Sonar in Barcelona in June we hoped that the CD would relive some of the entertainment we experience while dancing our asses off at Almogavers 86. Oh boy does it, it is a great compilation that showcases some classics such as Quad 1 by Code 6 (which is featured on another of our playlist Nu Groove 25 West 38th from 1991) as well as some storming techno that we would expect to hear in the vault at Tresor in Berlin. This is a true classic and one we would advise you all to look into.

-Picnik Electronik June 24th 2013 Liveset by Tiga (2013) – Tiga never fails to entertain, whether its quirky electro pop, crazy techno, leftfield rave or alternative electronic classics. This mix from the Canadian festival Picnik Electronik from June is superb. 2 hours of non-stop party music that left us dancing about TBC HQ like lunatics. It is available via Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/tiga/tiga-piknic-electronik-june) and it would be wise to follow the link and enjoy. It will remain on our favourites list for a while.

-Still Vor Talent 100 – Oliver Koletzki (2013) – Mr Koletzki continues to release a high calibre of music via his Stil Vor talent label. This new compilation is an easy access, progressive and even trancey at times, collection of the best his label has to offer in a recent 100th release anniversary special. We are still getting into the 22 tracks that we have for our enjoyment and these can be enjoyed while chilling out or partying it up in the sunshine.

-Enthusiast -Siriusmo (2013) – Siriusmo has been a busy bee over the last few years with what seems like a never ending discography of tracks, remixes, EP’s and LP’s. The diversity of his production is impressive, from quirky electro pop, to shuddering ghetto techno and on to bassy techno nonsense. This new LP has been assisted by the Modeselektor team and 50 Weapons to create a great release that has received critical acclaim to date. It is hard to explain the Siriusmo sound so the best advice we could give at TBC is to track down Enthusiast and his previous releases (Pearls and Embarrassments is also recommended) as you will not be disappointed.

-BBC Radio 6 Mix 2nd August 2013 – Miss Kittin (2013) – Our Sunday was graced with this superb BBC 6 Mix from Miss Kittin (it was difficult to choose one of the BBC radioshows this week as each was gratefully received) which is in the format of a 1 hour radioshow where Miss Kittin presents her influences from Joy Division, Autechre and Dopplereffekt as well as her selection of alternative electronica from her native France for our enjoyment. This is broken up by an additional 1 hour club mix which is up to the normal high standard that we expect from Miss Kittin. Great techno, house and electro. Failure to listen to this one while its on the BBC Iplayer is a crime  – http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0072pz7

-Tsugi Sampler 59 – Brodinski pres. Bromance Los Angeles (2013)* – The star of the show this week at TBC HQ was Brodinski’s showcase of his Bromance sound released via Podcast on the brilliant Tsugi website. This sampler shows off the eclectic taste of Brodinski and his ability to fuse and combine a variety of music genres to create a mix that leaves you bopping away and yearning for another listen. Each track is superb however our highlights were the “techno’ chanting on Maelstroms Seele, the storming techno of DJ Hyperactive’s Music Box and the groovy Bicep track Stripper. This mix simply stole the show for us and we hope that you can locate a copy to enjoy as much as we did.

We hope that you have enjoyed another snapshot into our music collection this week and you can enjoy some of this collection for yourself.

Buenos noches.

TBC.

To start the music blog posts from the TBC crew we have a playlist of what we have been listening to this week. Those highlighted in bold are our particular highlights and the one with a * next to it is our pick of the week.

After a particularly heavy two months of jet setting, partying, clubbing and general debauchery we have a varied selection for the playlist this week. We are expecting a few to ask “Where’s all the techno?!” and this is a valid question. This is a somewhat eclectic collection of music that has been aired in our humble abode this week and while we have been out and about. Music appreciation is the key ; Disco, Electronica, Pop, House have all been enjoyed during a rare period of R&R.

Such a great playlist that includes some brilliant recent releases like Brontosaurus’s (Permanent Vacation) collection of previous releases with some great Arto Mwambe tracks, the new Get Lost mix compilation (Crosstown Rebels) from TEED with a particularly tasty 2nd disc of electro, techno and rave tracks and the new Defected release via Loco Dice which is a groovy little number indeed. There are some classic gems like AMOK from Atoms for Peace (Thom Yorke et al) which grows on you every time you listen to it, it’s epic, and the original Gorillaz album from Damon Albarn’s crew which was selected due to a recent showing at Glastonbury with the legend bobby Womack.

It was very hard to choose our favourites and our pick of the week as you might imagine, however the highlights this week:

-BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix – Todd Terje (2013) – This new edition to the essential mix arsenal and what a great bit of recruitment by Pete Tong as Todd Terje is a Norwegian Disco legend! From start to finish this mix never ceases to make you smile, bop away and want to steal Todd Terje’s record box.

-FACT Magazine Podcast #388 – Jon Hopkins (2013) – The FACT podcast series was a treasure trove of mine for some time however in recent months I had abandoned the series due to some substandard editions. My lack of faith was misplaced because at a recent friends party when questioned what mix they had put on, as I was jealous that I did not have this mix in my repertoire, I was informed it was the Jon Hopkins FACT podcast. Having recently enjoyed his Immunity album this mix picks up where his album left off. It is a moody, proggy journey of aural pleasure and is a must to download (http://www.factmag.com/2013/06/24/fact-mix-388-jon-hopkins), get it while you can!

-Balance Pres. Guy J (2013) – Ever since Guy J came on the scene a few years back, championed by Jon Digweed on his Bedrock record label, TBC have enjoyed partying to Guy J’s tracks and mixes. This new release on the critically acclaimed Balance series is another gem. Progressing from the blissed out to the (surprisingly) heavier tech-edged tracks this mix is one for all collections.

-Resident Advisor Podcast #373 – Helena Hauff (2013) * – This mix is head and shoulders above all of the other mixes listened to this week. Helena Hauff is a new name to TBC but one which we hope to hear a lot more from. Helena is yet another amazing techno DJ to hail from Germany (Hamburg) and is similar in sound to Anthony Rother, old skool Gigolo records (courtesy of DJ hell) and Le Chic (Susana Munoz & REKA) and provides 74 minutes of electro-techno destroyers. This mix has enjoyed the highest play count, the loudest volume and most appreciation. Yet another podcast not to be missed – http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=373

We will bring you weekly playlists and regular reviews so please come back for more!

Betty Bitch Blogs Again

Howdy dudey TBCers, it’s that time of year again! Yes, yes ya’ll, I’m talking Tram to the Lines! I’m currently recovering after a non-stop musical magic carpet Megaride around my all time favourite city and home! Friday saw Dense and Pika belting it out in true technotastic fashion at DLS. The only problem was how damn popular this place was! To arrive and be told the queue is likely to last 4 hours, wasn’t exactly what I’d been hoping to hear as I prepped myself for my glam entrance! Thank The Lord, I could just call my darling friends who run the place to usher me in the back door! It’s all about the contacts baby! Saturday saw my old Hacienda buddy Graeme Park take to the decks at Viper Rooms but I didn’t stay there long, the crowd simply weren’t cool enough! Bloo 88 terrace for Delve Deeper on the other hand was cool as cool can be. Oh how I adored dancing to those sublime house tunes. Look out for more parties there over the summer folks it’s the sunshine venue to see and be seen at! Laters techno tartlets!

Techno Breakfast Club on Tour – Sonar 2013

Well folks TBC have been very fortunate this year and have just got back from an amazing 2 week techno trip comprising of a week in Barcelona for the one and only Sonar festival and then a week hitting the clubs of Ibiza. Rather than bore you with a 10 page essay detailing our debauched exploits for the full 2 weeks we thought you’d prefer to see a some of our best snaps and a few holiday highlights:

One word mutha flippers – SONAR!!!!! Yes, I HAVE ARRIVED!!! I’ve been greeted by my favourite of all the favourite DJs – Mr Hell himself playing none other than Tresor at new club Almogavers 86. Regis pumped it out afterwards and despite waking up at 3am for my flight to Barca I managed to keep on dancing baybay until the small hours with all those terribly tasty Tresor fans at the fest this year. That was day one, day two was the official festival where my old buddies Kraftwerk put me in heaven for there 2 hour set in the gargantuan Sonar club stage! AUTOBAHN amigos! In 3D no less. My purple hair was blue for the evening and yes – i rocked it like only Betty Bitch knows how! Sunday = Row Town and I don’t think I’ve ever been happier!!! Pelted with water by sexy Spannish firemen, hit in the face with inflatables and cavorting with toy trumpets, flashing hats and sponge saxophones! It was mental, it was ridiculous, it was childish – I LOVED IT!!! Row 14 afterwards for Paul Ritch and Ida Engberg – it doesn’t get much better than a day and night like that! Sonar I love you and until next year – Buenos Noches!

So, it’s the detox (attempted) betwixt Sonar and Ibiza and what better place to spend this interim period than sunning myself and spa – ing it out at Axel – the ultimate GAY hotel in Barcelona! I arrived to see 2 black, exceedingly seedy, PVC, high back chairs in the foyer and I knew I was home! Before I knew it I was sipping on a Pina Colada mixed by an uber pretty, tanned, camp, bar man and bopping away to my Ipod in the sky bar/roof and pool terrace! 3 nights at this Club Tropicana became less of a detox more of a carry on/Ibiza warm up. Oh well, at least this bitch spent a few hours in the spa between cocktails! Roll on DC10!!!

Cargo Loading Bay Party 26.5.13

Cargo has long been the go to night for Sunday bank holiday fun in Sheffield and for this May bank holiday they brought house legend DJ Sneak to the Steel City. TBC however,  were far more excited about the day time events Cargo had to offer! This night has consistently brought quality parties to Sheffield for bank holiday with their sister party Mango on the BRB Terrace being a TBC staple and also the frankly insane loading bay party at Corporation in 2011. That day went down in Sheffield clubbing history not least because the bass was so intense the party got shut down by the environmental health!

This time saw the party move to the Fez loading bay but loading bay it was all the same! TBC got there fairly early to make the most of those sunny rays and we were greeted by the lovely Sir Vinyl Instinct complimenting the sunshine with some laid back, funky, old skool disco. TBC were the only peeps on the dance floor at this stage but did we care? Erm………….no! These disco vibes were just too dang good to sit and chat! The bar was packed with delicious cocktail ingredients and boy were those Brambles tasty, adding a bit of glamour to the edgy car park surroundings! Hunee was the main event outside and as the sun set over Sheffield he graced the decks looking exceptionally dapper in suit and bow tie no less (what was I saying about glamour?). He upped the pace with some seriously danceable electro and really the got crowd going which by this point was packing out the dance floor! A particular highlight was Daphni “Ye Ye”. I distinctly remember TBC going a bit mental at that point! So as far as living up to very high bank holiday expectations, Cargo loading bay party did not disappoint and reminded everyone there that there’s something just so Sheffield about having a party in a car park with a concrete jungle of a back drop and some seriously epic tunes.

Connect the Dots – 20th April 2013

P1000636

Connect the Dots, an exciting visual arts and music exhibition took place at the Old Grain Warehouse on 20th April 2013. TBC was lucky enough to interview one of it’s curators, Abdullah Al-wali. Read on for the low down on this event:

Connect the Dots is coming to Sheffield. Tell our readers what this project is all about?

Connect The Dots is a celebration of new media and digital technology through a series of inter-disciplinary events. The digital age has made multi-media collaborations easier and more accessible, our aim is to showcase the best of these projects whilst re-emphasising the importance of off-line communal experience and human interaction.

Connect The Dots explore the visual arts, photography, technology and music scenes – inviting them to exhibit, perform, educate, inspire and share their artistic visions through solo, collaborative and interactive exhibitions.

This year, our events will take place in Sheffield, however, we wish to grow and host events in other cities then eventually other countries. We intend on making each event a strong reflection of that particular city’s contemporary artistic scenes that belong there and inspire the multitude of inter-connected working artists.

Our first event is on April 20th 2013 at The Grain Warehouse in Victoria Quays, Sheffield – a beautiful grade 2 industrial listed building. There will be solo & collaborative exhibitions from Shaun Bloodworth, Mattias Jones, Elliot Holbrow & Joel Barton, Tommy Marshall, Paul Boardman & many more along with pop-up shops from Warp Records, Bleep.com, Now Then magazine, Hantu Collective etc.

Why do you feel that this is important at the moment?

I think it’s important for visual arts and digital multimedia to bring people together in a physical space because as technology gets more sophisticated it’s increasingly more on-line based. Therefore having it in the real world engages people more, sparks conversation and hopefully will inspire them to be more creative. I hope that the Connect The Dots events will also invite interesting collaborations between different artists. For example, with the help of Arts Council England I was able to comission Elliot Holbrow & Joel Barton to make a collaborative zine for the April 20th Event: http://vimeo.com/65133110

You have some really exciting visual arts exhibitions in store, which are you most looking forward to and why?

It’s difficult to say as everybody involved is incredibly talented with his or her own unique style. I’m really looking forward to Mattias Jones’s ‘Production Line’ installation as it incorporates intricate patterns drawn by robots along with live art from him and a giant light box.

What about music? Will there be any live performances on the day?

Throughout the day there will be DJ sets from the likes of Beneath, Squarehead, Walter Ego & many more. Unfortunately there wont be any live music as we have noise issues due to the flats above the venue!

The only live performance will be from Trans/Human. They will be performing ‘Disposal’, a durational work in which the central performative focus is a repeated action that results in the production of a physical and musical structure. Throughout this piece, one of the performers will be wired up to a TENS machine, which will in turn be connected to the audio devices, acting as a body conduit to the sculptural work that’s unfolding. As the work progresses, the performers will become engulfed within the tent-like structure. As the barrier between performer and audience becomes increasingly physical, the composition will invariably alter, displaying the sonic and physical possibilities of TransCutenous technology.

How long did it take to organise such a big event?

I had the idea since summer 2012 but didn’t want to rush into it until I was sure exactly what it was going to be. I started organising it officially from January 2013 and it has been an on-going process since. I’ve been fortunate to receive advice and support from Deborah Egan – she has a wealth of experience in the creative industries and her fantastic project ‘The Port Of Sheffield’ is also an official partner of CTD.

The venue for the event is The Grain Warehouse, Victoria Quays. What made you choose this venue?

There were a few venues I checked out prior to the grain warehouse but once I stumbled across it (thanks to Mattias Jones) it became the obvious choice for the exhibition. It’s a lovely building and every artists involved was keen to exhibit in there. It’s also right by the canal – a great part of Sheffield that’s massively under-used.

Techno Breakfast Club are very happy that you have chosen Sheffield to host this event – what made you pick the Steel City?

Well I’m from Sheffield so it made sense to start the project here. I know a lot of talented artists from the north that deserve to have their work exhibited and there’s a lot of interesting disused spaces to work with in Sheffield.

Have you been pleased with the response from local artists and businesses?

Definitely! Thankfully it’s a project that seems to have interested a lot of people so I can’t wait to see how it develops over the next few years.

Who inspires the Connect the Dots crew?

There’s too much to mention so I’ll have list my current top three :

Earnest Endeavours (www.earnestendeavours.com)

Troika (http://troika.uk.com/)

Ken Robinson (http://www.ted.com/talks/sir_ken_robinson_bring_on_the_revolution.html)

What’s next for Connect the Dots? Any more events in the pipeline?

There are a lot more events being planned for Connect The Dots as we speak, there will definitely be at least two more in Sheffield before the end of the year but I can’t give too much away right now. I hope that the project will get better each time and in 2014 I plan to move it to other cities in the UK and possibly abroad too! Watch this space and check our website at www.ctdots.co.uk.
